The area known as love canal represented the first widely known human caused environmental crisis in the united states. When mothers became aware of the health effects on their children, they organized and fought the state, the federal government and the company that caused the wreckage. Eventually, the entire neighborhood was evacuated, but only after continuous fights from the people who lived there.
