The Red Squirrels Are Coming Back
In Ireland, the grays and reds are showing two types of competition. The first is resource competition - they're better at finding food and habitat. The second type is disease mediated competition: Squirrelpox is killing off reds, but not grays. It means the odds are stacked squarely in favour of the non-native grey squirrels. Red squirrels were being seen where they hadn't been before. How did scientists find out that the red squirrels were coming back?
