Hume was famous for arguing that justice is an artificial virtue. Smith thinks that Hume hasn't done a good enough job in terms of explaining the nature of justice because he thinks people are selfish, but in your selfishness at the same time. And the remarkable thing is if you focus on that, you're going to generate more wealth for everybody else. That is the remarkable fact about commercial society. It's one of the most wonderful things. A commercial society creates liberty, enables liberty in a way that nothing else does.
