The Civil Rights Movement in Greece
In the late 19th century in Greece, civil rights and as you say, a black person escorting three women around the Peloponnese was not an issue compared to the United States at that time. A journalist Ida B. Wells has a terrific passage where she describes landing in Liverpool and she says, "It is like being born into another world" And that kind of experience was described by many African-American travelers throughout Europe where they found themselves welcomed.
