Functional Programming Is a Trend Now?

I feel like functional programming is a trend now. But I would like to have a reason behind that. Not just because everyone else is doing it. Functional programs are simpler for the, you know, the deep definition of simple. We need to be able to say what it's supposed to do and then hopefully get some technology helping us to determine that.
