For thousands of years philosophers have wondered about this sort of simple question. If our actions are completely determined by prior events, can we really be morally responsible for the things that we do? We thought maybe experimental studies could show what it was that was making people move in one direction and also pulling them at the same time sort of in the opposite direction. So we did a series of studies to show whether people could be pulled in these different directions.
