The Gods of the City

De Koulange describes in the chapter entitled The Gods of the City, how the city religion was founded. Just as a domestic altar held the members of a family grouped around it, so the city was the collective group of those who performed their religious ceremony at the same altar. There was nothing more sacred within the city than the Psalter, on which the sacred fire was always maintained.
