In the late 1930s, it's the first record we have. He sends a note to his graduate school advisor where he basically tells him, I've been thinking about some of the fundamental properties across all messages and all kinds of communications. So that basically percolates from 1939, 1938 until 1948. And what he does when he's not working at Bell Labs during those years is he's writing this paper on the side. In 1948, he publishes it in the academic journal that Bell Labs runs called the Bell Systems Technical Journal.
