The Lack of Certitude in Face Recognition

It's not just about how the technology operates. It's how the humans who use the technology, how that process, that socio-technical system that uses the technology along with other human decision-making components. A lot of systems allow the analyst running a face recognition search to edit the photo before it's submitted to the face recognition algorithm. That's going to introduce uncertainty into the system that we don't fully understand, but we can expect that it's there. Photoshoping evidence is novel. It usually doesn't belong within a forensic scientific discipline photo editing,. Yet we see it in face recognition and we don't understand it to a full extent how that impacts the end result.
