The Great Library of Alexandria
Alexandria was one of the ancient world's most politic significant and culturally rich cities. The great library is some ways the city of alexandria in a microcosm, an institution where culture and learning flourished before being destroyed by the tumult of history. Unlike modern rome, where you can still see ancient marvels like the pantheon, hadrian's mausoleum or trajan's column, there is barely any evidence of its ancient past still visible. This is part of what makes it such a fascinating mystery.
