Cardinal Whirl was acutely conscious that admitting to what he knew about McCarrick when and what he did about it was problematic not for him because he did everything right, it seemed. And that was the reason why I believe, and this is conjecture on my part, that I believe is why Cardinal Whirl denied that he had all this information at the times that he had it. Under those circumstances Cardinal Gregory was appointed to become the Archbishop of Washington. He understood the hurt that had been experienced in the archdiocese of Washington.
