Natural pandemics pose a tiny chance of causing extinction in the next century. engineered pandemics are more likely to cause widespread destruction, one in 30 per cent. We understand diseases much better with the germ theory of disease and we're spread further across the world. But there's also many ways in which we have gotten more safe. And it's hard to be sure how that all balances out.
