Jeff is now his wife's main carer with support from paid care workers. The majority of unpaid carers of adults are women, but as people get older the gender balance tends to shift. Emily Holtzhausen says that if you provide 50 hours or more of care a week then you're twice as likely to be in poor mental and physical health yourself. An estimated 1.5 million people are currently working in adult social care in England. But vacancy rates are up 52%. Why don't men fill that gap? Una Smith is Chief Executive of Skills for Care.
