Clovis and the Germanic Title Hludwig
Clovis was a Germanic title which meant famous or well-known warrior. The word Hlud had taken on the meaning of something praised or celebrated, so it came to mean famous or prominent. But that original Germanic title Hludwig was borrowed into the late Latin language and used as a personal name for people like Ludwig von Beethoven. And in early French Ludovicus was shortened to Lewis; then Lewis became Louis,. In fact, there were 18 French kings named Louis.
