A classic long time role has been to defend state laws. When somebody challenges a state law as violent of either the federal constitution or in conflict preempted by a federal law, then it falls to the attorney general. The recent Bruin case was really an example. We've had other cases that nobody paid the slightest bit of attention to, but they somehow got to the Supreme Court and needed to be defended.
