The Odyssey is an extraordinarily sophisticated take on what a nostost narrative is. Hardy felt guilty about the extent to which he had changed the fabric of St Juliet, which was falling down. He doesn't give up architecture until 1872 when he signs a contract to write a pair of blue eyes.
