The Origins of the European Feudalism
In many ways the European feudal system had its origins in the Roman system, specifically of what was referred to as the colonos. That really became the prototype for what became feudalism under the Empire. The big turning point in Roman history were the wars with Hannibal from Carthage that ended around 200 BC. In his book, Hannibal's Revenge, Arnold Toynbee says this was really the turning point of Rome.
