Gabapentin in Alcohol Withdrawal
Gabapentin is structurally related to GABA, the inhibitory neurotransmitter that is underactive during acute alcohol withdrawal. Benzos are a widely misused medication with a high potential for physical and psychological dependency. Once a patient is adequately loaded with benzodiazepines with resolution of their acute withdrawal symptoms, there is absolutely no reason to be sending them home with a prescription for Benzodiazepines. Their seizure risk is covered. We have a safer, better treatment for subacute withdrawal.
