Simone Bolivar, along with the help of some of his friends, goes and manages to escape Venezuela into the United provinces of new Granada. This is the territory that would end up becoming what is today modern day Colombia. And because very wealthy, because a noble with a lot of high ranking contacts, Bolivar does manage to secure position as the commander of a 70 man garrison in the small little town.
