A neurosis is a psychological disorder defined by persistent and deep levels of anxiety. A neurotic illness may also include depression, guilt, phobias, obsessions, and compulsions. The great Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung believed there was a cause and effect relationship between too much conformity and neurotic illness. Many people are conformists, but many in the modern day are also neurotic.
