Torribio Romo: A Border Crosser in the Desert

On this view, border crossers really would be encountering someone in the desert who helps them. They just later misidentify the person as Saint-Terribio when it's not. A Torribio is a real name and it's much more common in Mexico than in the US. The man they meet may just happen to have a superficial resemblance to Torribio Romo.
