I always think I wouldn't know where to ask to put the camera or how to talk to the actors unless I had my own personal grounding. You have to, like, even on the things that I've had to direct that I didn't write, I've either been part of coming up with the story of those things so that I've been embedding myself. And if that script doesn't have something you can connect to, it's not the thing that you can do. They're both very personal films, but done in very, very different styles. It seemed like you worked in television for a long time after the Paul Barrett before you actually then went back and made Cloverfield.
