The Cost of Unregulated Accommodation for Children
In the last five years at least nine children have died in unregistered and unexpected placements. At least four of those deaths were children who killed themselves, including a 13 year old boy. The Department for Education admits they don't actually know how many children have ended up in unregistered unregulated accommodation. They just don't collect that data. So where are all the children going? When they're out of options they sometimes send children to Scotland. If they're not lucky enough to get a regulated placement in Scotland hundreds of miles from family and friends well they end up in unregulated placements. This is a political choice.
