Brendan Ozawa De Silva is a professor of anthropology at Emory University. He studied contemplative Buddhism and learned compassion from his wife, Chicago. She introduced him to the practice of Nikon, which involves remembering your past in terms of other people's acts of kindness. "It can be very transformative because people realize they've received countless acts of kindness," he says.
