The Role of Ergot in Dance
The idea of maybe hallucinations, convulsions, spasms, confusion, and even death to an extent absolutely fit in what we're talking about. In some cases, ergot can be used as medicine to restrict bleeding. Historian John Waller argues that someone with ergot poisoning probably would have less blood flowing in their extremities and thus would probably not dance.
