The Why and What of Progress in the Physical Sciences

I don't think there has been progress in the last 40 years, obviously there's been tremendous progress in the information revolution. I think a little bit less there than I would have liked. The place where the really big gains will be made in the next 20 years are in some of these sort of more foundational material science that need to get built out. We can debate whether there was a lot of products in the last40 years or not. What I'm interested in is just getting it restarted today.
