For thousands of years prior to him, einsteinn and many of his contemporaries believed the universe was eternal, static, perhaps cyclic. It wasn't until the late 19 twenties when the notion that the universe was dynamic and not static came into play. Big bang comes along, boom. That supplants it with evidence.
