It's the ultimate statement of, there's really nothing you can offer me. It's not some sort of punk rebellion where you just form a new identity. The hermits are in a sense going out to the desert but their love of God is so thorough that they don't need anything anymore. So what they do is what they please, in quotes, but it's not threatening or heretical in that broader sense.
