Penny Mordent, former leadership contender and a senior member of Liz Truss's new cabinet began the day by breaking ranks. Like some other cabinet colleagues privately, she wants benefits to rise with inflation rather than in line with wages. Dining Street was furious with Mordent. It feels as though this conference has just set the tone for Liz Truss’s premiership, which is it will be troubled and racked up problems.
