The best thing Twitter could possibly do here is just stop having DM. It's like it's a malignant feature that shouldn't exist anywhere. I think Elon's description for an extended period of time, including on national TV, that this was intended to prevent Twitter from being able to read messages. And the initial implementation is really a long way from that. Means that there is a risk that people are going to place trust in this, that should not be there.
