The Transitional Object Stage

Winnicott: Over time, the transitional object stage then blossoms into a stage where according to Winnicott, the child plays. In playing, the child now claims a lot of different toys and objects and uses these toys to represent different family members. And this becomes a way for the child to signal or express its feelings about other people. So once again, we see that objects represent human beings for us.
