Brazil has really only had two periods of actual competitive democracy, one being 1945 to 1964, and one being sort of 1985 to the present. At the core of this was a Basel in which Brazil's former dictator Gédouleu Vargas came back into power after a brief and failed experiment with free market economics. Now they formed a coalition that was anti-vargas and was also allied to significant factions within the armed forces.
