The parthenon was destroyed in the seventeenth century and then rebuilt in the nineteenth. Its ultimately restored as part of a nation building project to enshrine a certain image of that greece wanted to have of itself. It made me think of how the roman ceum was built with the looted riches of the temple of jerusalem. Or how we learned, just recently in new york times, that the eifel tower was built from the money that france took from haide. That there are all of these erased stories behind all of these these monuments.
