McClellan was famous and this astonished even people who wanted to be on his side. I mean, if you're a smarter version of that, you feign humility. It's a basic strategy for the Anglo world and probably other. Not all political generals were bad. Like Segal had the German American constituency. Banks had the New England working class constituency. Logan had the southern Illinois dangerously process sessionist constituency. He brought them in on the Union side and fought extremely well.
