The attitude towards budget deficits shifted from the early 60s to they are terrible, immoral, ruinous, calamitous. Central Bank independence was in the 60s something between an afterthought and an idea rejected by both the left and the right. And today of course it's mother's milk. Everybody believes that Central Banks should be independent but a lot of them aren't.
