Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never wrote where Sherlock Holmes was born. But the idea for Holmes came from two places. Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the University of Edinburgh, noticed small details. He could discover what happened to a person just by looking at their injuries. Other books also helped Conan Doyle invent Sherlock Holmes. The Murders in the Room Org was one of the first detective stories. It follows a man named August Duper as he solves two murders. This is much like Holmes in the way he solves the case.
