Is There a Difference Between the High Art and the Common Art?

Some of the arts that we now see as classic, i began as popular. So plays in shakespeare's day were not considered high art. But a somebody like tolstoy denounced opera because he thought it was artificial. Most most artists aren't torn in in those two different directions. They choose one or the other. And for me, the most interesting art is that which appeals to both the connoisseurs and the common, common person.
