The Struggle Between the King and the Aristocracy in Rome

The king sided with the people and depended for support upon the clients and the plebs. The aristocracy then found itself threatened by a double peril, the worst of which was not the necessity of giving way before royalty. It saw rising in its rear, the classes it despised. And so there were motivations for opposing the organizing of the lower classes and opposing the pride and ambition of kings that went beyond personal material interest.
