Why Would Mary Be Perpetually a Virgin?

Zechariah asks the question, how can this be since I have no husband? Mary is already betrothed to Joseph. If it is the case that Mary and Joseph were never intending to consummate their relationship, then that would be make sense for the question. Zechariah has a reason to ask a question. The reason is, we're old. We've never had children before. How can this be? It's fitting Jesus would be the only son of Mary.
