New Testament scholar Bruce Winter says women in first century Rome were like pursuing adulterous affairs and getting away with it. I don't see a place where women were saying, "I've got to break free of all these shackles" The pagan women at this time, I think, were very interested in having ecstatic experiences of a religious sort.
