CHAPTER

The Role of Cholesterol in the Central Nervous System

Cholesterol is created in the liver. It gets stuck onto LDL particles, low-density lipoproteins. The macrophages eat it and then throw it back into the bloodstream to attach it to HDL particles so it can flow back to the liver. When you're older, you have systemic inflammation throughout your body. More macrophages are going to become M1 macrophages which are out there hunting down pathogens - contributing even more to the inflammatory state. This is a result of both inflammation and my mitochondrial dysfunction.
