Introduction

St. Paul's mental asylum in southern France was built 800 years ago as a monastery. In 1605, Franciscan monks converted St. Paul's into a mental asylum. Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night from his asylum window in between bouts of debilitating psychotic episodes. The secluded nature of such a place makes it an ideal destination to send troubled family members.
