The Death of Jemima Hardy
Jemima Hardy's marriage started off without the blessing of either family. Her mother felt that he was throwing himself away on an indigent member of the middle classes who had no dowry but would be quite expensive to keep. John Attisor Gifford apparently later called Hardy that low-born churl who dared to marry into my family. There was no contact between Hardy and Emma's parents after, nor much from Emma with her parents.
