The pope said Catholics don't have a moral obligation to have as many children as they possibly can under all circumstances. He was effectively aiming to affirm the licit use of natural family planning. Did he do that in a manner that was well received? No, was there a bit of a hermeneutic of suspicion there? I don't know. It was still kind of early.
