It is supposed to be perceived that an advisor is essential to getting a PhD. Raoul Botte, a very famous mathematician, was not my advisor. The system expects that just the way it can ask where did you go to college rather than did you went to college. If you have a PhD, it asks who was your advisor and it assumes that that has to be a condition that is met.
