The Golden Thigh

The Fisher King is a monarch, usually depicted as one of the keepers of the Holy Grail, who has been wounded in the thigh. His wound has not only made him impotent, but has also cursed his kingdom, which is similarly infertile and stagnant. The Fisher King cannot ride a horse, or do any other activities considered appropriately kingly, so he spends his time fishing in a river until his thigh can be healed. But to understand Pythagoras' golden thigh, perhaps we should take it back to the ancient Greek context.
