The Importance of Institutions in Capitalism
Deirdre O'Brien's new book, Thebourgeois Equality, is out now. She argues that capitalism can be damaged by bad institutions as opposed to necessary capitalism being supported by good institutions. Deirdre: Italy has lost the power to control its exchange rates and devalue - which means it loses state power upwards rather than downwards. But I think institutions in some cases do matter because when you change them, you end up with different results from what you had previously.
