The Dongfang Chi, by Chen Di
The Dongfang Chi is hailed as the first detailed account of Taiwan's indigenous people. Chen Di referred to them as Yi, which means barbarian and carries all the well-traveled baggage of cultural chauvinism. He noted they tattooed their bodies, ate a lot of dare meat, were extremely physically fit, and could run as fast as a horse. The Shilaya are among the Ping-poo, or Plains Aboriginal people who lived in the west of Taiwan. We thank these Shilaya people for giving us the name Taiwan.
