The us. Army had to protect south viet nam from the incursions of communist guerilla fighters who waged an insurgency campaign in the jungles and river deltas of the south. The vi kong were not idiots, going head to head with the american military machine would be suicide for a ragtag army of illiterate, poorly equipped guerillas. So instead, they decided to wage a shadow war, only engaging when they were absolutely positive they could win. And this evolved into a strategy called search and destroy.
