In 18 82, an estimated two thousand russian jewish emigrants were arriving in new york. Emma was horrified at the conditions on ward's island and helped found a hebrew technical institute to help immigrants build a better life there. In late 18 83, she penned the poem that would become her most famous, the new colossus. We are going to get to the poem itself in just a moment.
